STREPTOCOCCUS: First casualty in Greece is a six-year-old child

The first case of death by streptococcus in Greece was a six-year-old, announced the National Public Health Organisation (EODY) on Monday.

EODY said that it was informed by a hospital of the death of a six-year-old child by the bacterium.

The national health agency has logged the incident with the European Centre for Disease Prevention & Control (ECDC).

"It is the first case of death by streptococcus A following the sharp rise of cases reported in Europe, and epidemiological data does not indicate there is concern for the country's public health," the Greek agency said.

Group A Streptococcus (GAS), also known as Strep A, are bacteria commonly found on the skin or in the throat. Under some circumstances these bacteria can cause disease.

It is an infection commonly presents as a mild sore throat ('strep throat') and skin/soft tissue infections such as impetigo and cellulitis.
