DNA from Avgorou priest confirms son’s tragic death in train collision in Greece
The death of a Cypriot college student has been confirmed after he went missing in a horrific train accident in Greece, while the fate of a young woman also from the island still remained unknown.
According to the Cypriot Ambassador in Athens, Kyriakos Kenevezos, the body of 23-year-old Kyprianos Papaioannou was identified on Thursday evening through DNA.
Papaioannou, a college student from Avgorou, was one of dozens of victims who perished in a fiery train crash outside Larissa on Monday, when a passenger train and a freight train collided head-on, killing at least 57 people and injuring many more.
Dozens of passengers were still missing, including 24-year-old Anastasia Adamidou from Paphos. DNA results were said to be expected regarding the fate of the young woman, a dentistry graduate who is now feared dead days after the crash.
The remains of Papaioannou, the son of a local priest in Avgorou, was identified through DNA after his father had traveled to Greece to provide a sample immediately after the accident.
