The 20-year-old who suffered a heart attack while playing football with his friends in Thessaloniki breathed his last in the early hours of Friday.

The young student was hospitalised for the past week in a critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit of the Papageorgiou hospital, Thestival reported.

It is recalled that on the afternoon of February 22, the unfortunate young man had gone with his friends to a 5x5 pitch on Agios Dimitriou street in the centre of Thessaloniki. While they were warming up, the 20-year-old felt unwell and left the pitch.

A few minutes later he felt better and entered the field to play again, but suffered a heart attack. A gymnast who was at the scene immediately tried to resuscitate the young man with a defibrillator.

The 20-year-old regained consciousness, but it appears that he later suffered another cardiac arrest. The ambulances had immediately arrived at the scene and for 1.5 hours they made efforts to bring him back to life.

The emergency doctors at the hospital fought to keep him alive and after an hour managed to revive him. However, this morning he tragically passed away.

The 20-year-old's funeral will take place on Saturday, March 4.
