Tourist arrested for stealing stones and marbles from the Acropolis

A 26-year-old tourist was arrested with 33 stones and three pieces of marble after he allegedly removed them from the Acropolis archaeological site in Athens.

Police arrested him on Sunday night for violating legislation on the protection of antiquities and cultural heritage, as well as weapons laws.

According to the police, a security guard at the Acropolis spotted the accused moving inside the archaeological site outside of working hours. He immediately called the police.

The police immediately mobilised and found the 26-year-old. During a check they found in his possession 33 stones and three pieces of marble, which he had earlier removed from the archaeological site. They also confiscated a knife.

Athens police charged him and the accused was taken to the prosecutor.
