Greece General Strike: How public transport will operate on March 8

Greece is expected to be paralyzed on Wednesday as several unions of the private and public sectors.

Social groups are joining the general strike to demand justice for the 57 victims of the train collision in Tempi and a thorough investigation into the causes of the disaster, bringing o justice to all those involved without exception, whether the station master, the executives of the train and railway companies as well as politicians.

On 24-hour strike are, among others, civil servants, teachers, hospital doctors, as well as workers at public transport means, including those in trains and ferries/ships.

However, some public transport means will operate at certain hours to facilitate people to join the protest rallies.

Public Transport 24h Strike & Work Stoppages

Metro Line 1 (ubran train ISAP), Tram will operate 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Metro Lines 2 and 3 will operate from 12 noon – 4 p.m.

Buses in Athens & Thessaloniki, trolley buses and Proastiakos on a 24-hour strike

The 60 intercity bus lines KTEL will operate as usual

Ships and ferries from Piraeus are on 24h strike from 00:01 Wednesday until Wednesday midnight

Trains continue their 48-hour strike until 6 a.m. on Thursday, March 8, 2023.

There were some reports about a strike by taxi drivers. In a statement on Tuesday evening, their union SATA has called its members to participate in the protest rally and a pre-gathering at 10:30 a.m.

* If you plan to travel by sea, check with local port authorities and travel agents.

* Regarding travelling by train, one should note that the government is reportedly considering halting train traffic for two weeks or up to a month until some safety measures are implemented. There may be some gov’t announcement tomorrow, Wednesday.

Pharmacies in Attica and Thessaloniki strike on March 8

Pharmacists in Attica announced a four-hour work stoppage on Wednesday in support of a strike caused by the aftermath of the Tempe train disaster.

Pharmaceutical Association of Attica said pharmacies would be closed from 11:00 to 15:00.

Their colleagues in Thessaloniki said they would strike from 11:30 to 14:30.

On-duty pharmacies will cooperate during business breaks.
