Turkish Elections: Pollsters discuss a "strong derby" between Erdoğan and Kılıçdaroğlu

By 1 year ago

Opinion polls in Turkey show a steady lead for the head of the opposition, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, over President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, however, Turkish pollsters are talking about a "strong derby" at the ballot box on May 14.

Speaking to SKAI's correspondent in Istanbul, Manolis Kostidis, the head of the Metropol polling company, Özer Sencar, emphasised that the difference between the two candidates will be very small, describing the electoral process as a "derby".

"Today, Erdoğan's percentage is at 42% and Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu's is at 44.5%. Even if the Homeland Party has an independent candidate, we can easily say that the elections will go to the second round," commented the head of Metropol, who is considered a "guru" of pollsters in Turkey.

"This is true even though the Kurds finally have their own candidate. With today's image, Erdoğan and Kılıçdaroğlu are in the middle. The numbers are close," he added.

Analysts estimate that the result will be determined by the security of the electoral process in the eastern regions, which were also affected by the recent deadly earthquakes.

The latest opinion polls in Turkey show a lead for Kılıçdaroğlu, but this seems to not be enough. The majority of those undecided come from the pro-Kurdish HDP party, which is negotiating "exchanges" for supporting the opposition candidate.

According to reports, the pro-Kurdish party is allegedly claiming at least two portfolios, the Ministry of Culture and that of the Environment, while it seems that it is moving away from claiming the ministry responsible for relations with the European Union, which it requested to be re-established.

As already known, Kılıçdaroğlu handed over the election manifesto of the six-party "National Alliance" to Pervin Buldan and Mithat Sancar, who lead the HDP.

The Kurdish votes are decisive for securing a significant lead in the election battle, despite the reaction of Meral Akşener's nationalist "Good Party", which does not want the HDP to participate in the next government.
