Alekos Fassianos Museum opens its doors to the public on April 26

Alekos Fassianos (1935-2022) was one of the most widely recognized contemporary Greek artists.

Most of his works were deeply influenced by his Mediterranean identity, and were often inspired by mythological themes and traditional Greek scenery. His unique sense of color put him at the forefront of the artistic scene of his time.

The new museum dedicated to the artist is housed at a building in Metaxourgeio (in the centre of Athens) which belongs to the Fassianos family. The idea of renovating the building to house the Alekos Fassianos Collection was jointly conceived and designed by Alekos Fassianos and his long-time friend and renowned architect, Kyriakos Krokos, in the 1990s.

The idea of renovating the building to house the Alekos Fassianos Collection was jointly conceived and designed by Alekos Fassianos and his long-time friend and renowned architect, Kyriakos Krokos, in the 1990s.

The original building from the sixties became an experimental ground for the architectural visions and ideas of Krokos and Fassianos and it illustrates their aesthetic and philosophic principles; the complicity between artist and architect highlights the dialogue between the works and the space that houses them.

Besides housing the Fassianos Collection, the Museum will host exhibitions, talks and educational programs for children and families, in collaboration with other institutions.
