AI-generated selfies of Cleopatra and other historical figures go viral

In recent years, artificial intelligence has been used for a variety of applications, from cars to facial recognition technology, and now a new AI tool has created selfies of historical figure, like Jesus and Cleopatra, that have gone viral on social media.

The tool, created by an Israeli startup called D-ID, uses machine learning algorithms to analyse portraits and sculptures of historical figures and create realistic "selfies" of how they might have looked in real life.

The images are based on facial features such as bone structure, skin texture and hair color, and are created using genetic contrast networks, a type of artificial intelligence system that can learn to create realistic images by analyzing large amounts of data .

The Jesus selfie created by the AI tool shows a man with long hair, a beard and a serious expression. Cleopatra 's selfie, on the other hand, shows a woman with dark hair, a prominent nose, and a confident look. Both images have been widely shared on social media, sparking debate and controversy.

Some have praised the technology for its ability to bring historical figures to life and provide new information about their appearance. Others, however, have criticized the use of artificial intelligence to create images of religious and historical figures, arguing that it is disrespectful or even sacrilegious.

This Battle of Waterloo computer-generated pic is inspired by Napoleon’s final defeat, in 1815.

Despite the controversy, the AI tool's creators see it as a way to promote interest in history and spark conversations about the past. AI-generated selfies of historical figures are just one example of the growing use of AI in the arts and humanities.

In recent years, artificial intelligence has been used to create music, literature, and even painting, raising questions about the role of machines in creative expression and the boundaries between human and machine creativity.
