Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had a meeting with Archbishop Makarios of Australia at the Maximos Palace in the Greek capital on Friday.

The Prime Minister and the archbishop discussed the work of the Archdiocese, for which  Mitsotakis reiterated his support and appreciation. The philanthropic and social work of the Church was emphasised, as well as its contribution to maintaining the ties of the Australian diaspora with Greece.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Prime Minister noted that in the upcoming elections, Greeks living abroad will for the first time be able to vote from their place of residence.

“For the first time I have to tell you, you already know, in these elections some people – we wanted to be more, but unfortunately the limitations of the law do not allow it – will be given the opportunity to vote from their permanent place of residence,” said Mitsotakis to the Archbishop.

“It is a commitment for me, I want to convey to you, if the Greek people trust us and we manage to find the necessary two-thirds majority, to simplify this system even more, so that anyone who is registered in an electoral register can participate in the electoral process directory in Greece, without unnecessary paperwork,” he said.

“That’s what we wanted to do this time as well. Unfortunately it was not possible because some parties reacted. We achieved the minimum possible, but next time we will do more,” added the Prime Minister.

“We are all sure and we are waiting for it”, Makarios noted for his part.
