Greece impedes windfarms on Skyros Island to protect bird species

Island is important passage for migratory birds, says Environment Ministry

Greece impeded the construction of six windfarms on the central Aegean Island of Skyros to protect bird species, local media reported on Wednesday.

In its assessment, the Environment Ministry pointed out that the wind farms would cause permanent damage to protected bird species, including Eleonora’s falcon and Bonelli’s eagle, which would be at risk of being killed by collision with the wind turbines, the daily Kathimerini reported.

It added that the Island is an important passage and stopover for migratory birds.

Stressing that the noise the turbines generate would cause the displacement of species from their main habitats, the body also rejected the proposed installation of impact mitigation systems.
