Culture ministry employees to strike on Tuesday

A 24-hour strike to be held on April 25 was announced by employees at the Greek culture and sports ministry on Thursday.

They will also stage a protest gathering at the National Archaeological Museum at 12:00 noon.

The decision for the strike was taken by the Union of Employees of the Ministry of Culture & Sports of Attica, Mainland and Islands in collaboration with the Panhellenic Federation of Culture & Sports Ministry Employees (POE-YPPO).

This mobilization protests a February law changing five major museums' status from a public to a private entity: the National Archaeological Museum, the Byzantine & Christian Museum of Athens, the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, the Museum of Byzantine Culture of Thessaloniki and the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion.

The museums will continue receiving state funds but will also be independently responsible for fundraising and outreach campaigns.
