Elections in Turkey: Erdoğan offers free natural gas for all citizens

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is using every means to attract the votes of Turkish citizens ahead of the May 14 presidential election.

"The Turkish government will provide for one year free natural gas for household consumption up to 25 cubic metres per month," the Turkish president said on Thursday, according to Anadolu.

Speaking at a ceremony for the first delivery of natural gas from a Black Sea reservoir off the northern province of Zonguldak, Erdoğan also said next month will be free unlimited gas for household consumption.

The Turkish lira fell to an all-time low against the US dollar on Tuesday as uncertainty loomed over the outcome of presidential and parliamentary elections that could mark the first change of power in Turkey in two decades.

The Turkish currency plummeted to 19.5996:1 against the US dollar, in other words at a level never seen before since the new Turkish lira was created in January 2005, minus six zeroes from its previous value.
