Sudan: The first evacuation operations were successful - The safe removal of Greeks, the next steps

The streets of Sudan still smell of gunpowder because the civil war is still raging, with the residents of the capital Khartoum living an ongoing nightmare. Power has been cut to most homes, while water is scarce and supplies of food and medicine are running dangerously low.

In this incandescent setting, with the clashes and the deafening sound of gunfire not stopping, Western governments have rallied to rescue citizens.

With the death toll from the fierce hostilities exceeding 400 and ceasefire agreements falling through the cracks, the strength of diplomatic relations and partnerships is clearly evident as safe evacuation operations have already succeeded.

A series of countries including the USA, Britain, Germany, Sweden, Italy have removed their citizens from Khartoum.

On Sunday morning, the American operation was crowned with success, during which around 100 civilians were evacuated with three Chinook helicopters.

Then, in the afternoon hours, optimism and relief prevailed with the completion of the French liberation plan. In particular, a plane with 100 French citizens and other countries took off from Khartoum to reach Djibouti.

It was the first aircraft to take off from the Sudanese capital. Among the citizens, who were safely removed from the war zone, were eight Greeks, among them the wounded.

The Greek plan

The cooperation between Athens and Cairo paid off, as a little earlier it became known that the two Air Force transports, a C-130 and a C-27J, with 15 elite members of the Special Forces landed in southern Egypt.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in cooperation with the Ministry of Defence, sent, following the order of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, aircraft and personnel (medical and military) to Sudan's neighbor, Egypt, who will be ready to operate for the evacuation.
