The Governor-General of Australia, DSC, and his wife Linda have embarked on a historic visit to Greece, commemorating the long-standing relationship between Australia and Greece, dating back to World War I. The relationship was solidified during World War II in Greece, particularly in Crete, against the Nazi occupation.

The Governor-General of Australia, David Hurley AC DSC, and his wife Linda have embarked on a historic visit to Greece.

Upon their arrival in Athens, Mr Hurley and his wife were given an honour guard and red carpet treatment, which was captured in photos posted by the Australian Embassy in Greece. During their visit, they met with the President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and other key ministers of government and high-ranking Greek officials. They also met with representatives of the main opposition SYRIZA party.

One of the highlights of the visit was a special ceremony on the island of Lemnos to commemorate the ANZACs who served and fell during the Gallipoli Campaign. The Governor-General and his wife paid their respects to the fallen soldiers by laying wreaths and attending a special service.

After they visited Greece, Governor-General Hurley travelled to the United Kingdom to attend the coronation of King Charles.

Overall, the visit was a significant moment for both Australia and Greece, as it celebrated the strong ties between the two nations forged through history and shared experiences.
