On Wednesday, police reported that 17 migrants were rescued, including eight children, who were stranded on a small islet in the Evros River along Greece's northeastern border with Turkey.

According to a police statement, the migrants were left behind by a smuggler who had brought them over from the Turkish side in a boat.

All 17 individuals were found to be in good health and identified themselves as Syrians, as per the police.

This rescue occurred a week following a similar event in which 39 migrants were found stranded on an islet in Evros. In both cases, the stranded migrants contacted humanitarian organizations for assistance, who then informed the Greek authorities and the Frontex border agency of the European Union stationed in the region.
