Greek Danish musician and singer Victor Vernicos Jorgensen is the youngest artist to represent Greece at the Eurovision Song Contest. Whilst the 16-year-old gave his best on stage for this year’s competition he failed to win over fans and was eliminated in the semi-final round.

It’s the first time that a Greek entrant has been excluded in the Eurovision grand final since 2018 with Gianna Terzi and the song "My Dream".

Coming from a musical family, Victor has a Greek mother who plays the piano and a Danish father who plays the trumpet and is proud of his heritage.

Greek City Times caught up with Victor in the lead up to his Eurovision performance to learn more.

When did you first discover your musical talent? Are you from a musical or artistic family?

I believe all gratitude and glory goes to my mother for making me believe in myself ever since I was a kid and I truly took that as confidence and the other part is that I’ve just always had an internal crazy love for music.

My family is fairly musical. My grandfather played the clarinet in a jazz band, my other grandfather played the guitar, the piano and the saxophone and he sang and was a huge music lover too. That trickled down to my dad who used to play the trumpet and he is a huge music lover and my mother who played the piano and sang in the choir when she was younger.

What made you decide to pursue a career in singing? Do you play any musical instruments?

I just LOVE creating music, I play the guitar, the piano and the bass and I do music production. I have written songs and produced my song for Eurovision myself.

What kind of singer would you classify yourself as?

The type who is aching to express himself.

How do you cope with being away from home and your loved ones for long periods due to the promotion of your song?

My parents are with me during most of the ride but I definitely miss some loved ones. I’m doing this for them, for the people and for myself!

How do you balance being a student and a singer?

My school is online, so it’s pretty flexible and all the lessons are recorded, so I watch them back at later dates. My priority right now is Eurovision and I believe it deserves to be.

Will it be easy to tame your stress on the huge stage of Eurovision where millions of viewers will be watching around the world?

I don’t think about stress. When you get on stage you need to be a submarine- no matter the storm above, you keep on going.

Can you define what the Eurovision Song Contest means to you?

The Eurovision Song Contest is the Olympic Games of Music, it’s so fun, and I’m so glad to be around such beautiful and inspiring music and artists.

What would be your dream collaboration with other artists?

I love all artists, especially those who write their own music. Creation is what inspires me. Creating something new.

What are some of your future plans?

I plan to continue writing and releasing music and to artistically produce something that is good and unique. Stay tuned!
