Turkish Elections 2023: Cypriot influencer explains why he wants Kılıçdaroğlu to win

A Cypriot social media influencer gave his reasons why he wants Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu to prevail over Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in the upcoming elections in Turkey.

"As you may have noticed, for a few months now I have been paying a great deal of attention to the upcoming Turkish elections," said Harry Theocharous, an aviation specialist with influence in the Cypriot twittersphere.

"People have been asking me why I’m so interested and why don’t I mind my own business or bother with my country’s affairs. Others have been criticising my preferences accusing me of meddling too.

"Although I am Cypriot and can’t vote for anyone in these elections, I certainly am very concerned of the outcome. Why? My country's future depends on this.

"Turkey is one of the three guarantor powers of the Republic of Cyprus, of which almost half is occupied since 1974. The main candidates with the highest percentage are Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu.

"Mr Erdoğan has been in power for two decades and the situation in Cyprus is just getting worse by the day so why should I hope he wins? There are no guarantees in life but we should give chances.

"Mr Erdoğan has been given many so now its time for change to give his opponent Mr Kılıçdaroğlu a chance.

"They say, however better the devil you know rather than the one you don’t, ok we've seen Erdoğans actions towards Cyprus over these decades. Mr Kılıçdaroğlu has vowed to seek peace and stability with all neighbouring countries.

"His vice president Mansur Yavaş stated that Turkey will meet all EU obligations, including ones concerning the Republic of Cyprus.

"So why not for the sake of the benefit of the doubt? What do we have to lose? Nothing at all."

However, for Kılıçdaroğlu's talk of peace with neighbours, as recently as March he claimed that 16 Greek islands actually belong to Turkey, raising Ankara's longstanding false allegations on Greece's sovereignty.
