Yorgos Ziavras Leads Celebration of György Ligeti's Centenary with Ensemble Musikfabrik at Cologne Philharmonic Hall

Greek acclaimed maestro Yorgos Ziavras

Cologne-based conductor Yorgos Ziavras will conduct the renowned ensemble Musikfabrik 100 years from the birth of acclaimed composer György Ligeti at Cologne Philharmonic Hall.

On May 28, 2023, the Cologne Philharmonic will host a concert of György Ligeti's music, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of one of the most important contemporary music composers, conducted by the Greek internationally acclaimed maestro Yorgos Ziavras, and performed by prestigious Ensemble Musikfabrik.

The program for the concert will feature works by György Ligeti, one of the most influential and innovative composers of the 20th century. Ligeti's music often blurs the lines between different genres and incorporates unconventional techniques to create a unique sonic experience. Under the baton of Yorgos Ziavras, Ensemble Musik Fabrik will perform a selection of György Ligeti's works, including his famous Aventures, Nouvelles Aventures, the Trio for Violin, Horn and Piano and Mysteries of the Macabre.

“Ligeti is simply phenomenal, and his influence on the music of today and tomorrow is immense. I am delighted to collaborate again with Ensemble Musikfabrik, one of the leading ensembles for contemporary music worldwide, and coming back to conduct at my beloved Cologne Philharmonic,” says Ziavras

In addition to the performance of Ligeti's music, the concert will feature a children’s theatrical production directed by Annechien Koerselman.

Ensemble Musik Fabrik, founded in 1990, is a contemporary music ensemble based in Cologne. The ensemble has made a name for itself as one of the world's most innovative and versatile ensembles and has worked with a wide range of composers and conductors.

About Yorgos Ziavras

Athens-born conductor Yorgos Ziavras has been active in the international contemporary music scene (Ensemble Musik Fabrik, Electronic ID, Ergon Ensemble, tetttix, Gaudeamus Festival, Athens and Epidaurus Festival and others) with an extensive repertoire including many world premieres. He is co-founder and chief conductor of ÉRMA Ensemble (2019), a young ensemble that has already left its mark on the very competitive German contemporary music scene.

Ziavras has also conducted many prominent symphonic orchestras, including the Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz, Philarmonie Südwestfalen, Niederrheinische Sinfoniker, the Greek National Opera Orchestra, Südwestdeutsches Kammerorchester Pforzheim in concert venues like the Cologne Philharmonie, Megaron Athens, Greek National Theatre, Graf Zeppelin Haus etc.

He has studied orchestra conducting with Prof. Michael Luig at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, piano in Athens and Cologne with Elisabeth Kounalaki and Prof. Paulo Alvares and architecture design at the National Technical University (NTUA) in Athens.
