The group consisted of 32 men, 25 women and 34 children, with many stating they were from Syria. The Greek authorities were alerted to the migrants' presence on the islet via nongovernmental organisations, and the rescue operation was made possible when the group moved onto the Greek side.
The Greek government has called on Turkey to coordinate border control and prevent illegal crossings along the land border formed by the Evros River.
Only earlier this week a group of 138 migrants, consisting of 53 men, 32 women, and 53 children of Syrian origin, were detected by Greek border guards near the village of Nea Vyssa close to the Evros river
