Megara: Hundreds of Indians in traditional costumes take part in Sikh ceremony - Photos

Hundreds of Indians from Attica, Boeotia, Corinth and Achaia, wearing their colourful traditional costumes, took part in the religious procession held in Megara to commemorate the memory of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, a Sikh leader.

Arjan Dev Ji, according to historical evidence, was the first martyr of the Sikh religion, who was tortured and killed in 1606 by the Muslim emperor Jahangir because he refused to change his faith. The Sikh religion, a monotheistic religion, has its roots in northern India.

Today it is the dominant religion in the province of Punjab, where the vast majority of migrant workers in Greece come from, and thus there are temples in Athens and Megara.

In commemorative events, as in yesterday's, intense multi-color always dominates, with orange being the dominant colour.

During the 10-kilometre march in the city of Megara, it is noteworthy that a tanker truck always precedes, which wets the road, while a large group of believers sweeps the places through which the procession passes with bare feet.

Chariots also participate in the march, while this year the chariot in the colours of the Greek flag was notable.

The march started from the Sikh temple in the Orkos area, north of the city of Megara, headed south to Exo Vrysi, then west to the Armakades area, north to the workers' housing and finally east to their temple.
