Maria Callas - Odeon of Herodes Atticus: Great concert for the 100th anniversary of her birth

The "Maria Callas Greek Society" will honour the immortal diva on the 100th anniversary of her birth, on Saturday, June 17, with guests the internationally renowned tenor Roberto Alagna and the famous soprano Aleksandra Kurzak, with a massive concert at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens.

Roberto Alagna and Aleksandra Kurzak will present excerpts from operas that established Maria Callas as the most important soprano in the history of world opera, with the collaboration of the Symphony Orchestra of the Municipality of Athens conducted by Nayden Todorov.

The concert takes place as part of the Athens Epidaurus Festival and is part of the actions of the Hellenic Association Maria Callas.

It is of particular importance, due to the official inclusion of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Maria Callas in the UNESCO list of commemorations for 2023.

The purpose of the concert is the completion of the Maria Callas Museum, which opens its doors in the summer of 2023 in an emblematic neoclassical building belonging to the Municipality of Athens and located at 44 Mitropoleos Street, in the "heart" of Athens.

The proceeds of the concert will be allocated for this purpose.

The "Maria Callas Greek Society" was founded in 2012 by a group of scholars of the life and work of the greatest diva of the 20th century lyrical theatre, collectors, or even her simple fans, following the standards of the respective bodies that have existed abroad for many years.

Among the objectives of the Association are the promotion of the Greekness of Maria Callas, the preservation of the memory of the leading Greek soprano, who is undoubtedly considered the most recognisable opera artist worldwide, the operation and enrichment of the "Maria Callas" Museum in Athens, the creation of conditions for the collaboration of artists for the presentation of musical events dedicated to her memory, the gathering, collection, recording and study of data concerning her life and artistic career, as a Greek cultural heritage, the strengthening of the work of the National Opera and related bodies that they promote the opera, the collaboration with relevant bodies in Greece and abroad, the establishment and granting of prizes and scholarships in her memory.
