The prestigious Power 100 rankings for 2023 by The Daily Telegraph have recognized the achievements of three notable Greek-Australians, with one even securing a place in the top ten.

Leading the pack is Peter V’Landys, the Chief Executive of Racing NSW and Chairman of the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC), who impressively clinched the fourth spot. V’Landys, originally from the island of Kythera, migrated to Australia in 1965 with his family. Over the years, he has made significant contributions to the horse racing industry, including his notable accomplishment of introducing the world’s richest turf race, the ‘Everest.’

V’Landys’ influence further soared when he took on the role of ARLC Chairman in 2019. During his tenure, he skillfully navigated the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, successfully resuming the NRL season, which made him widely recognized as the saviour of rugby league during those uncertain times.

The next Greek-Australian to make the list is Nick Politis, the Chairman of the Sydney Roosters and a prominent businessman, securing the 18th position. Politis arrived in Australia from Kythera in the late 1940s and has played a pivotal role in the Sydney Roosters since 1976. His contribution includes pioneering the concept of jersey sponsorship for professional rugby league teams.

Politis has achieved remarkable success in business outside of his rugby league ventures, amassing a staggering $2 billion fortune through his diverse business ventures.

Rounding off the trio is John Hatzistergos, the Chief Commissioner of the New South Wales Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), who claimed the 44th spot. Born in Redfern, Sydney, to Greek immigrant parents, Hatzistergos has enjoyed a distinguished career in law and politics. He served as a member of the NSW Legislative Council for the Labor Party and held the position of Attorney General for four years, working alongside three different Labor premiers. Following his retirement from politics, Hatzistergos assumed the role of a judge in the District Court of NSW before being appointed as the Chief Commissioner of ICAC in 2022.

These three remarkable individuals showcase the immense contributions of the Greek-Australian community across various fields, solidifying their positions among the influential figures in Australia.
