Remembering Father George Kanellis: A Beacon of Hope and Compassion in the Greek Orthodox Community of New Zealand

The passing of Father George Kanellis from the Holy Metropolis in New Zealand has evoked an outpouring of tributes and condolences.

On Saturday, July 1, Father George peacefully departed, as announced by the Holy Metropolis on their Facebook page. He is survived by his wife Michelle, their three children Evangelia, Manoli, and Sophia, his mother Evangelia, and siblings Konstantinos and Maria in Sydney.

The news of Father George's untimely demise has deeply saddened the Greek communities in Australia and New Zealand, with many expressing their respect for the young Cretan priest.

The Cretan Federation of Australia and New Zealand conveyed their heartfelt condolences to the Kanellis family through a Facebook post. They recognized Father George's unwavering dedication to the Greek Orthodox faithful in New Zealand, emphasizing his passion and love for all those who had the privilege of knowing him. Additionally, they highlighted his role as a pastoral father and community leader, particularly for the young Greek and non-Greek children in New Zealand. Father George was described as a shining light and a source of hope for the entire community.

Upon hearing the news, the Cretan Association of Sydney & NSW expressed their profound sadness, acknowledging Father George as a vital part of the Cretan community. They emphasized his involvement as the Vice President of the Cretans Association of New Zealand Incorporated, highlighting the lasting impact he made during his time of service.


Meanwhile, in New Zealand, the Holy Trinity Christian Greek Orthodox Church of Auckland's parishioners mourned Father George's loss. They praised his relentless dedication to the congregation, recalling the guidance, compassion, and unwavering faith he offered to all who sought his counsel. The church community recognized him as an exemplary priest and a pillar of strength.

The funeral service for Father George Kanellis will take place on Thursday, July 6, at 11 am at the Greek Orthodox Parish of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, located at 3 Hania Street, Mount Victoria, Wellington, New Zealand.
