Greece's Giannis Antetokounmpo's Availability for FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Uncertain Following Knee Procedure

Giannis Antetokounmpo, the prominent player from the Milwaukee Bucks, is contemplating whether or not to participate in the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup for Greece 2023 due to his recent knee arthroscopy.

According to Antonis Kalkavouras of Gazzetta.gr, Antetokounmpo underwent a knee arthroscopy during a brief visit to New York approximately two weeks ago. While the procedure and knee issue are not deemed severe, Antetokounmpo is currently weighing the possibility of sitting out the upcoming World Cup. The Greek Basketball Federation is still awaiting his final decision, as reported by Gazzetta.gr.

Furthermore, Giannis' brother, Thanasis Antetokounmpo, underwent a meniscus cleaning on June 28. When questioned about his availability for the World Cup, Thanasis, who is 30 years old, refrained from speculating and did not provide a definitive answer regarding his decision.

In the previous season, Giannis showcased impressive statistics, averaging 31.1 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game over 63 appearances for the Bucks.

During the FIBA Basketball World Cup, Greece has been placed in Group C, set to compete in Manila, Philippines, against Team USA, Jordan, and New Zealand. If Greece advances to the Second Round, they will face teams from Group D, consisting of Montenegro, Egypt, Mexico, and Lithuania.

The FIBA Basketball World Cup is scheduled to occur from August 25 to September 10 and will be hosted by three nations for the first time, namely the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia.
