The conversation took place at the initiative of the American minister who wanted to discuss with Mr. Mitsotakis the upcoming summit of the leaders of the NATO member states, in Vilnius, Lithuania, on July 11 and 12.
One of the serious issues facing American diplomacy is Turkey's refusal to allow Sweden to join NATO. Although not mentioned in the State Department statement, the issue was discussed in conjunction with Turkey's request to acquire US F-16 fighter jets.
According to State Department Spokesman Matthew Miller:
"Foreign Minister Antony J. Blinken spoke today with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
They discussed the importance of close cooperation between the United States and Greece, as well as the upcoming NATO Summit in Vilnius.
Minister Blinken underlined that the United States sees Greece as an indispensable partner and a key ally in NATO with which to advance the common goals of peace and prosperity.
The minister thanked the prime minister for Greece's continuous support to Ukraine."
