Heatwave closes Acropolis in Athens

The Acropolis of Athens will be closed to public for several hours on Friday, July 14, as the heatwave that hits Greece reaches its peak with temperatures over 41 degrees Celsius also in the Greek capital.

Friday morning, a tourist fainted due to the heat, while on the Acropolis and she received first aid by ambulance rescuers and police officers, the Greek Police posted on social media.

As announced by the Culture Ministry, the Acropolis will operate on reduced hours on Friday and will be closed to public from 12 o’ clock noon until 5 o’ clock in the afternoon.

The archaeological sites of Ancient Agora and the Kerameikos will remain in operation, where it is possible to visit the Archaeological Museums there, the ministry reportedly added.

During the summer, the Acropolis is usually open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

It should be reminded that temperatures in Athens are forecast to reach up to 41°-43° C tomorrow, Saturday, July 15, 2023, so similar measures may apply too.
