The Greek men’s national water polo team has progressed to the quarter-finals of the World Championship despite initially trailing by five goals at halftime against the USA. An incredible turnaround and a buzzer-beater by Alexandros Papanastasiou secured victory for Greece, 15-14 and qualified for the round of 8 of the World Championship.
Thodoris Vlachos’ internationals, after a poor second eight minutes, were left trailing by five goals at halftime (9-4) but outscored the USA 11-5 clinching the victory with a buzzer-beater by Papanastasiou.
To get there, the National Team needed to turn up the heat through their defence and have a dream fourth quarter where they had a partial 7-3 run to pull off the upset.
After this win, the national team qualified for the quarterfinals directly and will wait to find out their next opponent. This will be determined by a cross-match between the second of the third group and the third of the fourth.
