"49 years since Turkey's invasion of the Republic of Cyprus, the continued occupation of the Republic's northern region remains a flagrant violation of international law, numerous United Nations resolutions, and a deep affront to the Cypriot people. Turkey's aggressive actions uprooted thousands of individuals from their homes, and to this day, many are still unaccounted for.
"I firmly denounce Turkey's ongoing aggressive and confrontational conduct, including provocative actions in Varosha. President Erdogan must immediately withdraw the more than 40,000 troops from the territory of the Republic and foster conditions for Cyprus' reunification.
"I reiterate my unwavering commitment to Cyprus' sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the establishment of a unified state based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation, ensuring its defense. I will persist in pursuing legislation that strengthens our military ties. The Eastern Mediterranean Security and Energy Partnership Act demonstrated that the United States and Cyprus stand as steadfast allies and partners."
As the 49th anniversary draws attention to the historic events, Senator Menendez's statement highlights the ongoing commitment to seeking a resolution to the long-standing issue, supporting Cyprus' aspirations for peace, and maintaining strong bilateral relations.
