Fire breaks out in Evia - Blazes still raging in Rhodes and Corfu

A new fire broke out early on Thursday on the island of Evia, specifically in Kymi.

According to the Fire Brigade, the fire burned mixed forest and farmland near the town's entrance and did not yet threaten residences. A total of eight fire engines with 17 firefighters as crew, assisted by two firefighting helicopters, were battling the blaze.

Firefighters, police, volunteers and residents of Magnesia were fighting the flames all night as the fire that broke out on Wednesday in Velestino and claimed the lives of two people continued to burn despite the efforts to contain it.

Shortly after 1:30 on Thursday morning, a message was sent via the emergency number 112 to the residents of the village of Melissatika to evacuate the area and head towards Volos. At 5:30 a new message was sent to evacuate the areas Chrysi Akti Panagia, Velanidia, Marathos and Kritharia.

Another message was sent at 5:46 for the evacuation of the areas Pefkakia, Alykes, Ag. Georgios and Nea Aghialos.

Strong ground forces were operating to extinguish the fire raging in Volos, assisted by three airplanes and one helicopter that started operating early on Thursday.

On Rhodes, flames rekindled in the villages Vati and Gennadi. The fire on Corfu may be subsiding but there are still scattered fires. As for Karystos, the fire was still burning in the areas of Antias and Platanistos.
