Odontotos: Greece’s Magnificent Cog Railway through the Spectacular Mountains

The Odontotos railway in Greece, one of the few remaining cog railways in Europe, traverses the country, passing through its magnificent mountains.

This unique railway, locally known as “Odontotos” meaning “the one with the teeth,” has a rich history and offers breathtaking views.

Cog railways, equipped with cogs or teeth to safely ascend mountains, are common in many mountainous regions of Europe and beyond. Although Greece’s railway network is not extensive, connecting only major cities, the local train service between Diakopto and Kalavryta in Achaea, Peloponnese stands out for its historical significance and natural beauty.

Once the primary mode of transportation for residents of the mountainous villages in the northwestern Peloponnese, the Odontotos railway now serves as a popular tourist attraction. Visitors flock to experience the stunning scenery while enjoying a comfortable ride on this iconic train.

The modern route spans a distance of 22 kilometers (14 miles), starting from Diakopto and passing through the renowned Vouraikos Gorge and the ancient Mega Spilaeon monastery, before reaching the historic town of Kalavryta.

Significantly, Odontotos’ track is one of the narrowest in Greece, adding to its charm and allure. Trainose, Greece’s sole train operator, has plans to further expand the network, connecting Kalavryta to the nearby ski resort in the region.
