Greece to step up inspections of beach bars for contract violations

The Greek government "will not exempt anyone" from inspections to ensure that beach bars and related food facilities are following regulations and not blocking the public's free access at any beach, National Economy and Economics Minister Kostis Hatzidakis said on Wednesday.

Following protests about high-priced rentals of beach chairs and umbrellas and the takeover of most of the beach area, Hatzidakis said the inspections would increase during the summer to ensure that businesses observe their contract terms.

The Greek constitution protects public access to the beaches of Greece for free, he noted.

Protests led, among other things, to inspections in the Santa area of the popular Paros island that recorded significant violations between July 21 and 24.
