Fernandez Falls to Sakkari, Misses Quarterfinals at Washington Tournament

Leylah Annie Fernandez, hailing from Laval, suffered elimination in the round of 16 during the Washington tournament on Friday. In a match that lasted just over an hour and a half, Greece's Maria Sakkari emerged victorious with a score of 7-5, 6-2.

Sakkari showcased her prowess on the court, serving five aces and winning an impressive 75 percent of points on her first serve. Following a brief respite, Sakkari continued to dominate, defeating American player Madison Keys with a score of 6-3, 6-3 to secure her spot in the semi-finals.

Originally scheduled to face off on Thursday, Fernandez and Sakkari's match was postponed to the following day due to rain. As Sakkari prepares for the next round, she will face off against top seed Jessica Pegula, who triumphed over Elina Svitolina with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
