Thus far, Kyrgios has only played one official singles match this season, resulting in a loss in Stuttgart, Germany. Following this match, he withdrew from Wimbledon due to a wrist injury.
In 2022, Kyrgios showed his potential during the tournament, finishing as the runner-up to Novak Djokovic. In the previous year's U.S. Open, he reached the quarterfinals and eliminated the reigning champion, Daniil Medvedev, in the fourth round. However, he ultimately lost to Karen Khachanov in five sets.
Unfortunately, the 28-year-old Australian has faced multiple setbacks this year. He started 2023 by sitting out the Australian Open due to an injured left knee that required arthroscopic surgery. Subsequently, he also missed the French Open. As a result, Kyrgios has experienced a decline in the ATP rankings and is currently ranked No. 92.
The U.S. Tennis Association announced Kyrgios' withdrawal from the U.S. Open, along with that of Jan-Lennard Struff from Germany. Although the specific reasons for their absences were not immediately provided by the USTA, their spots in the men's singles field were filled by Facundo Diaz Acosta and Diego Schwartzman from Argentina.
During a pre-tournament news conference prior to his withdrawal from Wimbledon, Kyrgios was asked if he missed tennis during his time away.
'No, I don't miss the sport at all, to be fair. I was almost dreading coming back a little bit,' he said with the hint of a smile. 'But it's my job.'
