Strong Earthquake in Chania: Warning to Avoid Dangerous Areas

An earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale struck 7 kilometers east of Sougia in Chania, triggering the activation of emergency services through the 112 hotline. Residents in southern Chania received a message advising them to avoid dangerous areas such as canyons and rocks, as there is a risk of landslides. The earthquake occurred at 10:40 in the morning and was felt in the western regions of Crete.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located east of Sougia in Chania, with a focal depth of 10.7 kilometers. The tremor was felt in Paleochora, Sougia, and Sfakia, but no damages have been reported thus far.

Earlier in the morning, a weaker earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale had occurred in the same area. According to the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, this tremor was recorded 41 kilometers south of Paleochora, with a focal depth estimated at 25.8 kilometers.

Tragically, a serious accident occurred in the Samaria Gorge where a hiker was injured. It is believed that the 4.9-magnitude earthquake caused rocks to fall on the hiker, resulting in the amputation of their leg. The injured person is currently being airlifted by helicopter, with firefighters from Anopoli and Vryses present at the scene.
