Massive Fire near Alexandroupoli believed to be caused by lightning, says Mayor

The large fire has been raging since Saturday afternoon a few kilometers away from Alexandroupoli is due to lightning, said the mayor of the city, Yiannis Zamboukis.

Speaking on Mega TV, he said that the fire started after a thunderstorm.

The fire broke out in the morning in the area of Melia in Alexandroupoli, as reported by Mega TV. At 13:00, a message was sent from 112 to alert residents of Melia, Nipsa, Pefka, and Loutra areas to be on alert.

After 3:00 PM, the flames crossed the Egnatia Motorway, and immediately a signal was given by 112 for the evacuation towards Alexandroupoli of the Loutra, Agnadia, Aristino, and Doriko areas.
