Secluded Greek Island Offers Generous Incentives to Attract New Residents

A charming Greek island invites you to relocate and offers generous incentives, including a financial incentive and land to realize your dream villa.

Nestled at the edge of the Aegean Sea, between Crete and the Greek mainland, Antikythera is a picturesque haven inhabited by a mere 68 individuals. In an effort to address its dwindling population, the island is extending a unique proposition.

Families, especially those with young members, who choose to embark on a 45-minute flight from Athens and establish their residence in Antikythera stand to receive a monthly allowance of 500 euros (£426) for a span of three years. This accumulates to a total of 18,000 euros (£15,400).

The Greek Orthodox Church has committed this monetary contribution to invigorate the island's diminishing community. Once a thriving habitat boasting 300 inhabitants during the early 1900s, Antikythera has seen many of its youth migrate to larger islands or the Greek mainland in pursuit of employment opportunities.

Should you opt to relocate to the island, avenues for livelihood include professions like fishing, baking, and construction. Mayor Andreas Harhalakis expressed the island's aspirations, stating, "We eagerly seek numerous families to breathe new life into our island."

Presently, Antikythera features a solitary modest shop offering essential food and wine, while banking services and ATMs are absent. For visiting family members, accommodation options include the island's lone hostel and a single Airbnb listing.

It has been reported that four new families have already moved to the island.
