Documentary ‘The New Greek Americans 1960 – 2018’ clinches two awards in Crete

The 1st prize of the International Documentary Film Festival that was held recently in Ierapetra, Crete, the award for feature-length documentaries as well as the Special Jury Prize for International Films were awarded at the 19th International Documentary Festival of Ierapetra to the film ‘The New Greek Americans 1960 – 2018’ by director Anna Giannioti.

The late Oscar-winning and beloved actress Olympia Dukakis is the narrator of the documentary that captures in the best way what it’s like to grow up as a Greek on the other side of the Atlantic.

The New Greek Americans 1960 – 2018 is the third and final documentary of the trilogy funded by the Greek Heritage Society based in California and pays tribute to the Greek-Americans of second or third generation through stories and moments that perfectly convey the feeling of growing up ‘feeling Greek’.

The story begins in the 1960s as young Greek Americans embrace changing times despite their conservative upbringing. Each decade influences the Greek community with events such as the Civil Rights Movement, the Cyprus Invasion, and Michael S. Dukakis’ candidacy for President of the United States. The participants share heartfelt and humorous stories that reflect ‘growing up Greek’. The film provides food for thought in response to the question: Will the second and third generations actively engage with their cherished ancestral heritage enough to keep the Greek culture alive in America? Olympia Dukakis is the ‘hostess’ and narrator of the film.
