Boris Johnson vacationed in Greece for the sixth year in a row

Boris Johnson

Boris Johnson, in a black blouse, the same coloured Bermuda shorts and sandals, was walking carefully on the beach of Niborio, carrying a small child on his shoulders. Few paid attention to the blond man and the woman following him holding the hand of a small boy, and only when the man took the little boy off his shoulders did some recognise the former British Prime Minister.

For many, the small village in Evia is the last place that a former Prime Minister of Britain, who also happens to be a very recognisable person, would choose. However, as Proto Thema highlighted, he is a person who knows much about Greece and consciously avoids islands like Mykonos and Santorini or bustling Rhodes, where the British are almost everywhere.

And this says a lot about the man who almost perfectly expresses the EOT motto "Live your myth in Greece" since he has been visiting our country continuously for his summer holidays with his family for the last six years.

Boris Johnson, his wife Carrie Symonds and their three children went down to the unique beach of the small settlement of Niborio every day for a swim.

From Nea Makri

This year's Greek summer of the former British prime minister and his wife, Carrie Johnson, and their three children began at the beginning of August when they landed in Athens without being noticed by the media.

Their first stop was the area of Nea Makri, where the family had rented a villa to stay for a little more than a week, so they made sure to visit supermarkets in the area.

There, they bought everything necessary for their stay, while they also had a young nanny with them since their two children are three and two years old, respectively, while the third just turned one month old.

Like last year, this year too, Boris Johnson and his wife bought the products they wanted by themselves, moving freely and comfortably through the supermarket. In contrast to 2022, no one photographed them inside the store, while there were no photos of any of their outings in the area before they left for Evia.

The place that has enchanted them since last year, when they vacationed there for the first time, left them with the best impressions, so they decided to return this year.

Marmari and Niborio

The family's departure took place on the liner that brought them to Marmari in Evia, and from there, by road, they ended up in Niborio, a small beautiful village between Marmari and Styra.

Last year, Johnson had chosen Styra as the place where he would live with Carrie and their two children, and having as a base the residence of the Lawrence family, where they lived, they often made trips to the broader area of Karystos.

After swimming on the beach, he drove the car he had rented and visited shops in Karystos and a picturesque tavern in the village of Giannitsi. There, he was particularly friendly with those who approached him to greet him, far from the image of the former British leader.

Before posing for a photo with the tavern owner, he duly paid tribute to traditional dishes such as tiganopsomo (fried bread) and herb pie while enjoying meatballs and kontosouvli.

This year, their honour was Niborio and its enchanting bay, the only beach in the village with its few houses and hospitable people.

The British former prime minister and his family chose to stay in a complex with three villas, renting one from August 14 to 24. Johnson loved the beach where he went down every day with his children and the woman who convinced him for the third wreath of his life.

Carrie is the daughter of Matthew Symonds, co-founder of The Independent newspaper. The couple had been together since the end of 2018, and a year later, they announced their engagement and that they were expecting their first child, born in April 2020.

What attracted him to Niborio was the natural beauty of the village and its largely untouched character by modern civilisation. The clean sea and the people, who respect him and his family and the privacy they desire, contribute to their enjoyment of the Greek summer getaway to the fullest.

He had done the same last year when he stayed in Styra while an excursion to the beach in the village of Livadakia, which was unknown even to many locals, made an impression. Then, even though there was no shade, he sat in the sun and read a book while his son enjoyed playing in the water.

Karystos and Pelios

The former prime minister left Evia last Wednesday after a three-week holiday in our country, to which he has become very attached. On Tuesday night, he visited a well-known tavern in Karysto for dinner.

At the same time, in the morning, he had a relaxed meeting with the city's mayor, Lefteris Raviolos, who also uploaded the relevant photo on Instagram.

The tavern owner greeted him with smiles and hugs while the family enjoyed classic Greek flavours on this last outing of the year.

And if last year Johnson received severe criticism for his holidays in Greece at a time when Britain was immersed in the Brexit adventure, this year they left him alone.

Some remember him reciting ancient Greek at the United Nations General Assembly on Climate Change in September 2021, choosing to recount Sophocles. This is also an example of his love for Greece, which he has been visiting continuously since 2016, initially having Pelion as his permanent destination.

Stanley Johnson's father maintains a lovely country house, the now famous "Villa Irene", which became his son's refuge several times when he wanted to isolate himself from everyone. He did something in January 2019 when he celebrated the coming of the new year with his then-partner and later wife in this particular villa in the Hortos settlement.

Humour and tzatziki

Although the media had not noticed the couple's presence in Pelion, they were finally spotted by two couples of British tourists in a tavern. Boris Johnson did not shy away from talking to them - he is known for his outgoingness and humour - before continuing his meal.

After that, details began to emerge about the Johnsons' "paradise", Boris's passion for tzatziki and the mediocre milk-free frappe he drank at "Kalogiros", a shop in Argalasti.

A lover of excursions, he visits various villages in the area, and until recently, Pelion was the place he went to when he came to Greece. This changed in the last two years, when Evia became his family's leading destination, with an intermediate station in Nea Makri.

First, it was Styra, followed by Niborio, and now it remains to be seen whether Boris Johnson will return to his beloved island next year.

He moves around relaxed and comfortable, usually without security - although there is always a bodyguard nearby - chatting with anyone who approaches him and not refusing to be photographed when asked, projecting the image of a cool politician.
