Homemade hummus: How to store and preserve it

Hummus is delicious and nutritious and can be eaten in many ways. It accompanies our snacks and sandwiches and is perfect for a dip next to our drink for a relaxed evening with friends.

You can find ready-made hummus everywhere, but it's best to make it yourself. The recipe is simple. It's time-consuming as you'll need to soak and boil the chickpeas. To save energy, you can cook a larger quantity of legumes and use a part to prepare hummus.

We have gathered all the tips for you to prepare homemade hummus. However, since it does not have preservatives like the packaged ones, you should know how to preserve it properly.

Below, you will find everything you need to know.

Where do we store homemade hummus?

We transfer the hummus to a clean container that will close airtight to preserve it for a sufficient period.

How do we fill the container?

  • The container should be dry and sterile to avoid moisture entering our preparation
  • When filling the container, make sure to level the surface of the mixture with a spatula to avoid air entering and creating bubbles.
  • Then, pour a thin layer of olive oil over the hummus. This will protect it from oxidation.
  • Close the container airtight
  • You can place the hummus in the refrigerator, in its coldest part, usually on the top shelf.
  • It can be kept in the fridge for about a week. In the refrigerator or freezer?

Hummus will keep in the fridge for up to a week as long as it's well sealed, either airtight or at least with cling film to protect it from any smells.

You can preserve it in the freezer if you avoid consuming it within the week.

How? Either in a container suitable for freezing or in particular freezer bags. Ensure the container is well sealed and the bags are tightly closed. To eat it from there, remove the desired amount from the container (if possible; otherwise, take it all out) and let it thaw either for a few hours or overnight.

Once thawed, you can eat it as it is or blend it in a blender to smooth its texture.

It is important to note that the texture of hummus may change slightly after freezing and thawing, but the flavour and aroma should remain intact. Please consume thawed hummus within 2 to 3 days of thawing to ensure the best freshness and quality.
