Rain record in Greece was broken - 754 millimetres in Zagora Pelion!

Rainstorm Daniel is developing into one of the most potent bad weather phenomenon our country has experienced, with the daily rainfall in Central Greece far surpassing previous records, at least since 2006, according to the National Observatory of Athens/METEO.

The long hours of heavy rainfall in Magnesia and on the coast of Larissa have caused the death of one person and significant problems in the infrastructure.

The highest daily amount of rain until 20:30 is recorded in Zagora Pelion and is equal to 754 millimetres, with, for comparison purposes, METEO reporting that in the Athens area (Ellinikon meteorological station, EMY), there are, on average, four hundred millimetres in one year!

The previous record daily rainfall of 644.7mm was recorded in Paliki Kefalonia during Mediterranean Cyclone Janus in September 2020.

The map and table below show the 8 highest rainfall in millimetres by 20:30 as recorded by a network of meteorological stations of the National Observatory of Athens/METEO on Tuesday, 5/9, with a footnote to the meteorological stations that stopped transmitting earlier due to a power cut.

Rainfall in most areas continues.
