ELSTAT: Deaths in Greece decreased by 11.4% in the first 31 weeks of the year

A decrease of 10,011 deaths or 11.4% was recorded in the number of deaths in Greece, including those due to the Covid-19 pandemic, in the first 31 weeks of this year (2/1/2023- 6/8/2023), reaching 78,189 (39,441 men and 38,748 women).

In 2022 (3/1/2022- 7/8/2022), they had risen to 88,200 (44,218 men and 43,982 women).

According to ELSTAT, a decrease of 949 deaths (1.2%) occurred compared to the average in the first 31 weeks of the period 2017-2022 (79,138 deaths).

The corresponding percentages of change per year for this period amount to 5.1% in 2022 compared to 2021 (83,955 deaths), 9.7% in 2021 compared to 2020 (76,549 deaths), -0.5 % in 2020 compared to 2019 (76,950 deaths), to 7% in 2019 compared to 2018 (71,919 deaths) and to -6.9% in 2018 compared to 2017 (77,256 deaths).

The first 31 weeks of 2023 compared to the corresponding period of 2022, a decrease in deaths is observed in all weeks except the 29th (17/7/2023- 23/7/2023) and the 18th (1/5/2023- 7/5/2023), which show an increase of 12, 1% and 1.5% respectively.

The decreases are observed on the 31st (31/7/2023- 6/8/2023), on the 4th (23/1/2023- 29/1/2023) and the 11th (13/3/2023 – 19/3/2023) ) week by 24.2%, 22.6% and 22.4% respectively.

By age group, a decrease is observed in most sun groups, with the principal decreases, in absolute terms, recorded for the age groups 85 to 89 years (2,614 deaths), over 90 years (2,393 deaths) and 80 to 84 years (2,154 deaths).

By region of permanent residence of the deceased, deaths decreased in all 13 country regions. The most important reductions, in absolute terms, are presented in the regions of Attica, Central Macedonia and Western Greece by 3,083, 2,331 and 808 deaths, respectively.
