Maria Sakkari Finds Renewed Motivation to Continue Tennis Journey Despite US Open Exit

Maria Sakkari, a Greek tennis player, suffered early exits from the US Open and expressed her consideration of taking a break from the sport due to her poor results.

This season has not been successful for her, with a few disappointing losses in significant tournaments. These setbacks greatly impacted her confidence and overall performance, leaving her in a dark emotional state.

Following her early elimination at the US Open, Sakkari revealed her contemplation of a break from tennis. This decision is not uncommon, as several players have taken breaks in recent years. Her press conference, which was recorded and circulated on social media, received widespread attention. Back home in Greece and from her fans, she received immense support that motivated her to continue fighting. Known for her perseverance, Sakkari could not simply give up.

She has since returned to the court, participating in the San Diego Open. During the tournament, Sakkari explained the reasons behind her change of heart regarding her previous comments. She stated that she was not aware her press conference was being recorded, and she did not expect it to gain as much attention, especially in her home country. The overwhelming love and support from her fellow players and fans persuaded her to persevere. She felt incredibly grateful for the solidarity she received, considering it one of the most heartwarming experiences in her career.

As the third seed, Sakkari will commence her San Diego campaign against Camila Osorio after receiving a first-round bye.
