Mikis Theodorakis: His classical musical work is presented at the National Opera

The classical aspect of the work of Mikis Theodorakis will be presented through a concert organised on Saturday, September 23, by the Alternative Stage of the National Opera at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.

The distinguished pianist Apostolos Palios will give a solo piano recital as part of the three-year cycle of Mikis Theodorakis.

Despite the great popularity and extensive distribution of the composer's work, fewer people know the fact that, before the iconic release of Epitaph in 1960 turned him ("always in search of a dialogue", as he notes) into artistic folk song, which he would serve unreservedly for twenty years or so, Mikis Theodorakis had, according to his formulation, "set out to become a European composer" cultivating with equally warm devotion the word musical creation, where he would turn again, with renewed vigour, from in 1980 and after.

The program of the Apostolos Palios concert includes four of the great composer's most important piano works, all shining examples of his more hidden creative aspect that unfolds on either side of the famous "folk" of his twenties.

These are the works Prelude for Piano (1947), Little Suite for piano (1955), Sonatina for Piano (1955, dedicated to Manos Hadjidakis) and Melos (1998).
