Greece says ready to keep humanitarian relief going to help Libya out of floods crisis

Greece has confirmed its readiness to keep humanitarian work ongoing and help Libya overcome the devastating flood crisis that swept Derna and other areas of eastern Libya two weeks ago, causing massive destruction and loss of lives.

These remarks came by the Chargé d'Affaires at the Greek embassy in Tripoli, during his meeting with the Deputy Head of the Presidential Council, Abdullah Al-Lafi, on Sunday, according to the Presidential Council's media office.

Al-Lafi welcomed the Chargé d'Affaires, offering his condolences to the Greek people on the death of a number of members of the Greek rescue team in a tragic traffic accident while on their way to Derna to contribute to the search and rescue operations. 

The Libyan embassy in Athens participated Saturday in the funeral and burial ceremony of five members of the Greek rescue team who died in a traffic accident while on their way to Derna last week. 

The Presidential Council’s media office said that Al-Lafi assured the Greek Chargé d’Affaires “that the scale of the disaster is very large, which makes the efforts of local and international rescue teams difficult, especially in light of the lack of unified management of the crisis,” hailing the efforts of Greece, and all friendly countries, to alleviate the impact of the disaster.

Meanwhile, the Greek Chargé d'Affairs expressed his deep sympathy with the families of the victims of this painful tragedy, and his full solidarity with the Libyan people, wishing speedy recovery for the injured, and reaffirming his country's readiness to continue humanitarian work efforts and help Libya get through this crisis.
