Angelina Jolie Channels  American-born Greek Opera Legend Maria Callas in Pablo Larraín's 'Maria' Biopic

In the first glimpses from Pablo Larraín's upcoming biopic "Maria," Angelina Jolie undergoes a remarkable transformation, stepping into the shoes of the legendary opera virtuoso Maria Callas.

Directed by the talent behind "Jackie" and "Spencer," this new film delves into the life of the iconic and controversial singer, often hailed as the original diva. The official description for "Maria" promises a poignant journey through the tumultuous, captivating, and tragic life of the world's greatest opera singer, reimagined during her final days in 1970s Paris.

This independent production, made with an interim agreement from SAG-AFTRA, is scheduled for an eight-week shoot in various captivating locations, including Paris, Greece, Budapest, and Milan. The screenplay, crafted before the Writers Guild strike, is the work of Steven Knight, who previously collaborated with Larraín on "Spencer." Alongside Angelina Jolie, the ensemble cast includes Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Haluk Bilginer, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Valeria Golino, bringing their talent to breathe life into this compelling narrative.

Director Pablo Larraín expressed his excitement about the project, saying, "I am incredibly excited to start production on 'Maria,' which I hope will bring Maria Callas' remarkable life and work to audiences all around the world, thanks to the magnificent script by Steven Knight, the work of the entire cast and crew, and especially, Angelina’s brilliant work and extraordinary preparation."

Notably, Jolie's costumes in the film draw inspiration from real garments Maria Callas wore, including vintage fur items sourced from Massimo Cantini Parrini's archive collection. To align with ethical considerations, consultations with PETA were conducted to ensure no new fur was used in the costumes.

"Maria" is produced by Juan de Dios Larraín for Fabula, Jonas Dornbach for Komplizen Film, and Lorenzo Mieli for The Apartment, a Fremantle Company. The responsibility for worldwide sales falls under the capable hands of FilmNation Entertainment.
