The upcoming EnergaCamerimage film festival in Torun, Poland, is set to kick off with the highly-anticipated awards contender “Poor Things.” This film, directed by Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, is already gaining attention after winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.

“Poor Things” stars Emma Stone and delves into the peculiar narrative style typical of Lanthimos’ works. The story revolves around Bella Baxter, a Victorian woman who miraculously returns to life after a suicide attempt, thanks to the ingenious scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter, played by Willem Dafoe. Bella embarks on an adventurous journey with Duncan Wedderburn, a charismatic yet dissolute lawyer portrayed by Mark Ruffalo, in a quest for self-discovery and sexual liberation.

Robbie Ryan, the film’s cinematographer, will introduce “Poor Things” at Camerimage. Lanthimos and Ryan previously collaborated on “The Favourite,” which competed at Camerimage in 2018 and received the Audience Award.

Based on Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel, “Poor Things” also features Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott, and Jerrod Carmichael.

Yorgos Lanthimos, no stranger to the Oscars, has seen three of his films in contention for the prestigious awards. Searchlight Pictures is scheduled to release “Poor Things” in the United States on December 8, raising the anticipation and expectations for this promising addition to Lanthimos’ acclaimed filmography.
