Cyprus police arrest 4 people after a small explosion near the Israeli Embassy

Police in Cyprus have arrested four Syrians on suspicion of setting off a small explosive device that caused no damage not far from Israeli Embassy in the capital Nicosia.

The police have announced that four individuals, who range in age from 17 to 21, are facing charges related to attempted destruction of property using explosives, possession and use of explosives, and possession of a knife.

Although the police have not confirmed whether the bombing, which occurred approximately 30 meters away from the Israeli Embassy, is connected to the war in Gaza, security measures have been heightened throughout the European Union as a result of the attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7th and the subsequent hostilities.

A court in Nicosia has ordered that the suspects remain in police custody for six days until they can either be formally charged or released by investigators.

Police reports indicate that two of the suspects were seen walking near the site of the explosion, while the other two were sitting inside a car parked in a nearby alley. Additionally, two knives and a hammer were discovered inside the vehicle.

A "very small quantity of pyrotechnic material" was discovered within a small metallic object at the scene by the bomb squad officers.
