With its roster featuring several top NPL (National Premier Leagues) players, Eritrea entered the tournament as one of the favourites, having recently defeated Afghanistan 6-1. Eritrea displayed an attacking style in the first half and scored twice from set pieces.
However, Coach Tangalakis made strategic adjustments for Team Greece in the second half, emphasizing possession play. This change in tactics allowed them to make a stunning comeback, taking the lead with just 10 minutes remaining and ultimately winning the match 3-2.
The Greek community's rich soccer history was a source of inspiration for the team. Assistant Coach Peter Tsolakis shared photographs from 1986, showcasing a Team Greece that featured numerous NSL (National Soccer League) players, including the current Tottenham Hotspur coach, Ange Postecoglou.
Coach Tangalakis emphasized the importance of the relationships formed on and off the field, stating, "What makes these matches interesting are the relationships formed both on and off the field."
Before the game, Greek Community President Bill Papastergiadis addressed the players, highlighting the team's history of success spanning decades and transcending club allegiances. He stressed the significance of playing for their teammates and being united by their Hellenic heritage.
Following their remarkable victory, Team Greece is now filled with confidence. Captain Skapetis expressed pride in the team's character and resilience, stating, "Today's game was definitely a good test for our boys. Returning from being down 2-1 showed great character and resilience, and I'm so proud of all the boys. This team can win the title for the second year."
With this win, Team Greece has advanced to the tournament's quarter-final stage and will face Afghanistan in their final group-stage match next Sunday at 2 p.m.
