Renowned Greek physicist Giorgos Grammatikakis has sadly passed away at the age of 84. After being admitted to the intensive care unit of the University General Hospital of Iraklio in Crete for respiratory failure, he spent several days under medical care before ultimately succumbing on Wednesday morning.

Grammatikakis obtained his PhD in experimental high energy physics from Imperial College in London in 1973. In 1982, he joined the University of Crete as a professor of physics. He later served as the rector of the University of Crete from 1990 to 1996, making significant contributions to the institution during his tenure. Eventually, he retired and was bestowed with the honorable title of emeritus professor in 2006, marking his remarkable career in academia.

In addition to his scientific achievements, Grammatikakis also dabbled in politics.
