83rd Anniversary of OXI Day: NSW Organizes Multiple Commemorative Events

Numerous initiatives have been organized by various organizations in NSW to commemorate the 83rd anniversary of OXI Day, a significant moment in Greece's history.

Today at 2pm, Inner West Council will partner with Sydney University's Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens to hold a wreath laying ceremony. This ceremony, commemorating the historic date, will take place at the forecourt of Marrickville Town Hall in front of the Winged Victory memorial.

Later on Saturday, October 28 from 6pm, The Greek Orthodox Community of NSW will host a Reception/Cocktail Party at the Greek Community Club in Lakemba, in recognition of OXI Day.

On Sunday, October 29, a service will be held at the Cathedral of the Annunciation of Our Lady Theotokos, conducted by Archbishop Makarios, starting at 6:30am. Following the service, a wreath laying ceremony will take place in the Cathedral's courtyard at 10:15am.

AHEPA NSW has organized their own event on Sunday, October 29 from 6pm at the AHEPA NSW Hall in Rockdale. The program includes speeches, poems, a traditional dance performance, and a photographic exhibition honoring the soldiers of Hellas. The keynote speaker for the event will be Dr. Vasilis Adrahtas from the University of NSW, delivering an address titled "When war gives birth to the poet – Odysseas Elytis and the Epic of 1940". A supper will follow the formalities.
